These much-anticipated and highly sought-after chickens are well worth the wait.
These are very large, wide chickens with gentle personalities. They have beautiful super fluffy feathers that nearly touch the ground and they only become more beautiful with age. The first English Orpington were created by William Cook in the 1800s. The two original color varieties were all black and all white. The black-and-white silver laced variety is a recent development, created by British Master Breeder and poultry judge Bob Follows.
Defining characteristics of the English Orpington include a deep, broad body with a short back, small head with a medium-size single comb. They also have a low stance, and fluffy feathers that give the breed its large, round appearance. The fluffed-out plumage also makes them especially cold hardy. They are incredibly docile and are excellent around children. The hens can be expected to lay up to 180 eggs per year and do sometimes go broody.
Like other Orpington varieties, they have the same quiet and gentle disposition. Orpingtons are an excellent choice for families and backyard flocks in urban settings. There are very few farms in the United States to own this magnificent bird.
