Although they're called "Russian" Orloffs (or sometimes just Russians), this beautiful breed actually originally comes from Persia. The Russian Orloff name comes from a famous Russian breeder of these birds, named Count Orloff-Techesmensky.
They are very cold hardy dual purpose birds with small combs and fat bodies; the hens lay a fair number of light brown eggs, too. They are calm, seldom go broody and can withstand confinement well. These bird often lay well through the winter months where others stop.
Birds are yellow and orange as babies. Mature females have light mahogany plumage with white spangles. Males are multicolored varying from orange to black to brown with some of the feathers tipped with white spangles. They have muffs, beards and an upright carriage with a slightly sloping back.
