Ancona Chickens were developed in Italy in the mid 19th century and are very closely related to the Leghorn; sometimes even called the Mottled Leghorn. Anconas are very hardy, even in the cold, just take precaution with their large combs. Anconas are good foragers and do well in free range situations. Their quick and alert temperament combined with their dark color make the Ancona an excellent choice in areas where birds of prey pose a serious threat. Since they are bred to flee and protect themselves, they are best admired from far away.
Anconas lay around 5 or more large white eggs per week. They are rarely broody. Anconas are a beautiful mottled pattern--beetle green-black feathers with white tips throughout. They have a single comb, yellow skin, and clean legs.
